▐ SHELLDER ▐ -- ▐ -- ▐ -- ▐ -- ▐ --
"You know... I spoil you way too much." Comatose observed, casually sprawled against the flat surface of a raised rock, watching her best friend, Shellder, as he happily ate his extensively sugary poffins. "You're lucky you're my only partner, or the other pokèmon would get jealous." Shellder snickered as he continued to gorge himself on the treat, as his trainer simply looked at him, shaking her head. She stared at him for a moment, taking in his appearance. He was much smaller when she first met him, although he was still pretty damn small- even after growing over the last few years.
He was a Shellder after all, and the members of his species rarely grew to be more than 1'0" in height, and 8.8 lbs in weight.
Coma smiled to herself as she reminisced about the past. Many years had passed since she met her starter pokèmon, although only recently had the two of them embarked on their Pokèmon journey. In the beginning, Kyoko had cosen to not train her Shellder to fight, so after finally setting off to travel the region as a pokèmon trainer, that proved to put her at a disadvantage. And here they were now, relaxing at the beach on a warm sunny day, doing seemingly nothing, although in reality the girl was planning out their next course of action as Shellder had the time of his life eating poffin and splashing happily in the water.
"...Alright." The girl slapped her knees as she stood firmly, digging her toes into the hot, soft sand that blanketed the beach so as to steady herself. It was about time to get some training in before the two of them moved on to the next town. Without another word, Kyoko reached into her bag and pulled out her Pokèdex, searching for Shellder's entry. Well, multiple entries. Comatose tended to update her pokèdex regularly, so there were multiple pieces of information that might prove useful to her battle stradegies.
"Shellder, (シェルダー) the Bivalve Pokèmon." That little bit of information was undisputed. There were a few different descriptions of the pokèmon's traits, however. The girl selected each of them consecutively, listening intently as the pokèdex droned in it's mechanical monotonous voice.
"Its hard shell repels any kind of attack. It is vulnerable only when its shell is open, and its tender body is exposed." Another- "It swims backward by opening and closing its two shells. It's large tongue is always kept hanging out." Then one more, at least, the only other one that Comatose actually cared to listen to; "Grains of sand trapped in its shells mix with its body fluids to form beautiful pearls." Shellder was most definitely suited to be a princesses partner.
So, she knew full well that Shellder had a near-perfect defense. But without any hands, feet, or useful attacks other than tackle; how could she possibly turn Shellder into a power-house? It would seem that the struggle to become the very best, would begin with this noticeably large obstacle: how to train Shellder effectively? The answer to that was simple. Something was better than nothing, and something was what they were going to do. If she couldn't train Shellder so as to increase his attack power, then why not make use of his swimming prowess, and increase his evasiveness?
What better place to do that than the beach; an area surrounded by water, as well as other water pokèmon. Shellder, being as spoiled and... Well, fat, as he was- could stand to learn a few things here. At any rate, it was time to look for a fight. Fortunately, Comatose brought her fishing rod, although lacked the right sort of bait. So, she'd have to use leftover poffin- so at the moment she'd only be able to attract pokèmon who liked sweet tasting foods.
That shouldn't be too hard. Most creatures were suckers for sugary goodness anyway.
"Hey, you!" Comatose had to have jumped a foot in the air. Shellder stared blankly from the water as a young boy approached his trainer. "We should battle!" He cried exuberantly, chest heaving as if he'd run for miles without stop. "Yeah, about that. We kinda just set out from home, and Shellder doesn't have any experience. I wanna raise him a bit on the wild pokèmon before jumping into the pool, you know?" She drawled, placing a hand on her hip.
"That's not how it works." The boy seemed confused by her reply. He glanced up and down the beach, and then locked eyes with her once more. "Trainers have to formally accept or decline all challenges they're given." The girl rolled her eyes in response. Is this how royalty is treated in Honiso Region? How barbaric. "Then... No."
"Okay then, give me your money!" She froze to his response.
"What, you're just going to mug me since you couldn't have it your way?" He chuckled, crossing his arms and tilting his head back. "You forfeited the match. That means you lose by default, so, you owe me prize money." The girl paused to consider his logic. Unfortunately, it made perfect sense. Ah, who cared if Shellder had yet to actually battle? The girl's royal pride refused any and all failures, not to mention she didn't have enough money to just throw around. "Nevermind then. I accept."
The boy didn't seem at all deterred by her change of heart, and instead smiled. "Come on out, Draco!" Kyoko's eyes widened in momentary panic as a Bagon came out of it's pokèball, with a flash of red light. She wasn't quite aware of how exactly this situation would play out, but she knew for a fact that Bagon's final evolution was one of the strongest in pokèmon history. They were at a bit of a disadvantage, or so she thought.

Her pokèdex, in all fairness, wouldn't allow her to see the moves that her opponent was capable of using- but it did reveal that they were at a disadvantage in regards to experience. Not much, but it was apparent that they were most likely going to lose. Fortunately, this was Shellder's playing field. Whether in sand or water, Shellder had the advantage. "I'm the challenger, so I get first move."
Kyoko rolled her eyes. What kind of logic was that? Everybody knew that the pokèmon with the higher speed went first either way... But since Bagon was a higher level than Shellder- she'd most likely take the first move anyway. And, predictably, she did. The dragon, at her trainer's command, lunged forward with her head lowered to the ground, as if going in with a headbutt attack. When in reality, it was a dragon, and was simply in a 'pouncing' position, as due to it's nature.
Shellder looked like a Sawsbuck in the headlights, sitting there with his eyes wide open, shaking slightly out of pure fear, mixed with anticipation. He expected pain, and a lot of it- after all, it was a Bagon. A higher levelled one, at that. With that in mind, Shellder instinctively withdrew into his shell, completely repelling the Bagon's bite attack, causing the dragon to cry out in pain and surprise. It pretty much just bit something harder than a diamond, when it expected to bite something soft, and fleshy. Obviously, it hurt.
Shellder's disc like eyes peered out through the crack between his shells, staring curiously at the Bagon's back as it flailed about, trying to regain balance as well as tune out the pain in it's gums. He couldn't help but snicker. Comatose, seeing this as an attack of opportunity, dished out order after order- Shellder tackled Bagon with it's back turned, causing the dragon's trainer to yell out angrily-
"That's cheating! You're only supposed to attack once, not three times in a row!"
"It's not my fault your Bagon is too slow and stupid to move." Hey, she had a point. Pokèmon battles were supposed to be... Matches. Often 'turn based', but whatever- if the opponent is taking their sweet time, there's no point in waiting around when you could get another attack in. At any rate, the challenger was pissed off. He clearly expected a clean, easy battle with a low level Shellder that had a tiny variety of moves, and could barely move on it's own in the sand. He got the latter, although it wasn't exactly a clean, or easy battle.
As Bagon moved in with another bite attack, Shellder flinched as the creature almost gnawed on his sensitive flesh that was hidden beneath his shells- but he managed to clamp said shells together before that could happen. The dragon cried out dramatically as her nose got caught between the diamond hard shells, she could feel the blood rush to her head as her snout felt as if it were about to be torn from her face in the most horrifying and gory way possible.
The pokèmon screamed, and only when she was on the verge of fainting as tears rolled down her scaly cheeks, did her trainer recall her. "I can't say I'm impressed..." He muttered, backing away from Comatose as if she were disgusting. The look on his face agreed. Kyoko extended her hand as she stared at him expectantly, waiting for her prize money. It never came. "Are you kidding? You're a cheat, and now I have to run back to the pokèmon center because you can't play fair. F**k off." He left without another word, sulking.
A moment of silence followed, until finally-
"Okay, let's get you cleaned up. No need to look like roadkill after your first battle."
Shellder glared at her reproachfully. He had just won, well, technically... His first battle, and she didn't even congradulate him? It would seem that he still had a lot he needed to do before he'd be able to impress her. Namely, evolve. But this was just another step towards evolution, although in reality he'd be incapable of evolution until his trainer got her hands on a water evolutionary stone. But no matter;
"Shellder!" Princess Comatose called to the water type, looking over her shoulder as she packed up her things, stuffing them into a large tote bag. "If you don't get over here this instant, I'm going to put you in your pokèball!" Horrified by the idea of being confined in a miniscule capsule, Shellder... Slowly... But surely, somehow hopped his way over to the girl, just in time to be pulled into a loving embrace. "Good job- I knew you'd make a wonderful body guard." The term 'body guard' wasn't exactly what the water type wanted to hear, but knowing his trainer- it was an endearment of sorts.
"Come on, we're going back to the pokèmon center to get you all healed up. We can continue training tomorrow, okay?"
